Folly Farm Underpass
Client: Folly Farm Tourist Attraction
Scheme: Underpass and highway improvements
This project involved constructing a twin 2.5 metre high, 2.5 metre wide, 17 metre long underpass under the A478 trunk road at Folly Farm tourist attraction in Templeton, Pembrokeshire. Pre-cast concrete box sections were installed, which weighed 7.7 tonnes each, there was a requirement to lay the box sections under existing utility services. These utility services consisted of a 450mm water main, BT fibre-optic cables and electric cables. Precast concrete head walls up to 4 metres high were utilised as head walls around the pre-cast box sections. The project also consisted of constructing a bus stop lay-by, crash barriers and associated tarmac paths entering and exiting the underpass. We liaised closely with the management of the tourist attraction to minimise disruption during opening hours.
Traffic Management was an important aspect of this project due to the work being carried out on the main A487 highway. Folly Farm is a popular and well known Pembrokeshire tourist attraction.
