Parc Penderri, Penllergaer
Client: Dwr Cymru Welsh Water
Scheme: 600mm steel trunk water main diversion
This scheme was undertaken due to planning permission being granted for 250 houses at Parc Penderri, Penllergaer, Swansea. The existing 25″ water main ran through the building site. This project involved the diversion of an existing 26″ high pressure steel trunk water main over a length of 530 metres. The new 600mm diameter steel water main was diverted under the new access road for the site. Each 600mm diameter steel pipe was delivered to site in 12 metre lengths which weighed 2.1 tonnes. All pipe joints were welded on site.
A challenge on this project was that the existing trunk water main could not be decommissioned, therefore the water mains connections had to be undertaken under pressure. This system, known as hot tapping and the photograph shows this operation being undertaken.
Traffic management and health and safety management were key considerations on this site, as the new residential houses were being constructed by other contractors as the potable water main was being laid in the new access road. Young Bros liaised effectively with all contractors on-site which allowed forward planning and a successful delivery of the project.
